The Hospice and Palliative Care Foundation, a registered 501(c) (3) not for profit foundation working with hospices and health care professionals across South Carolina, announces the celebration of the organization’s 20th year of operation and the pursuit of its mission to discover and address unmet needs of individuals and families challenged by end-of-life issues.

Founded in 2000, HPCF’s innovative and collaborative programs and services include financial, educational, technological, and grief support. HPCF has served thousands of families representing every county within South Carolina through its programs by contributing over $1.2 million to pay critical unfunded expenses not covered by public or private insurance

In addition, the Foundation provides resources for memory making and legacy building, grief education materials for teachers and school counselors to support children in classroom settings, and funding for Camp Hands of Hope, a family focused bereavement camp for children and families who have lost a loved one. Since 2007, over 1,500 children and their family members have participated in these nationally recognized camp sessions. In the past 5 years alone, HPCF’s programs have had a direct impact on over 6,000 individuals across the state and influenced countless more through the lives their lives have touched.

Diane Carlson, Associate Director, states: “Although hospice and palliative care patients usually have Medicare, Medicaid, or private insurance, for many individuals those benefits don’t adequately cover the cost of essential needs. Just one unpaid mortgage or utility bill can place an individual or family in a precarious financial situation. Additionally, we recognize the value of providing grieving children and their families with resources and support. Our programs are designed to address the urgent needs communicated to us by our partners working directly with hospice patients and grieving children, and to reduce the barriers they may face in receiving support.”
